The Shetlands
In October of 2016, we brought home Emily, a Shetland ewe we adopted from Green Tara Farm—our very first ewe and, as it turns out, our very first cardio workout.
On her very first night, Emily decided she did not agree to the whole “living here” arrangement and made a break for it. What followed was a 45-minute, after-dark game of “catch the sheep” across the farm. In the end, we’re still not sure if we caught her or if she simply decided we weren’t worth the effort and wandered back to the barn on her own.
Emily “roos” her fleece, meaning instead of shearing, we pluck it off by hand. Yes, pluck. And no, we are quite certain this is not her favorite bonding activity. On the bright side, she produces a respectable 3–4 pounds of fleece in the grease—so she at least contributes generously while judging us.
Then in July of 2018, Dolly joined the flock from Windland Flats in Princeton, Minnesota. Dolly is a lovely musket color and comes with a feisty personality to match. We’re hoping she’ll also roo her fleece… though based on her attitude, we suspect she’ll have some strong opinions about that plan.
