The Finnsheep

In May of 2016, five extremely handsome Finnsheep lambs joined our fiber flock as its founding (and loudest) members. They came to us from Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista, MN, and we brought them home to Park Rapids in true luxury fashion—crammed into two oversized dog kennels in the back of a Jeep Grand Cherokee for a scenic four-and-a-half-hour road trip.

“Scenic,” of course, meaning very, very noisy. Imagine a nonstop sheep concert with zero intermission.

We did sadly lose one that first summer to parasites, but the remaining four have thrived—providing us with endless entertainment, plenty of personality, and some absolutely gorgeous fleece (clearly worth every decibel of that drive).

The Finnish Landrace, Finn or Finnsheep is a breed of domestic sheep native to Finland. The fineness of Finnsheep wool has some individual variation, but the American Sheep Industry’s Wool Council ranks Finnsheep in the fine end of the medium wool category.[2] The wool has a soft handle, a moderate crimp and a high luster.
